Circle of Seasons Charter School 2017-2018 Teaching Opportunities in Grade 1

Circle of Seasons Charter School, the only Public Waldorf Charter School in the eastern United States, is seeking two PA-certified Grade 1 teachers for the ***2017-2018*** school year. (Yes, we are already starting to interview for next year! We have a very lengthy and comprehensive interview process.) Please note that Grade 1 teachers will loop with their classroom of students for several years in a row!

We are looking for three unique, talented, dynamic, passionate, and skilled individuals! Applicants should have a high joy-factor and positive energy and enthusiasm; superb classroom management and leadership; emotional maturity; excellent organizational and communication skills; a love of learning and a love of playing; and, a drive for excellence with a commitment to each child.  Applicants should display a strong capacity for kindness, compassion, and thoughtfulness. Ability to sing, play a wind instrument, draw/paint, or create original stories is a plus!

To get a general sense of what we do at Circle of Seasons, please feel free to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-ZSeepDmPE.

Public Waldorf Education is grounded in many, many things, but two of the key characteristics include differentiated, arts-based instruction in every classroom every day for every student and a profound commitment to age-appropriate and developmentally-appropriate instruction. COS students are physically active inside and outside of the classroom on a daily basis. Our students are engaged socially and emotionally throughout the course of each day. We recognize that cognitive and intellectual development occurs over time and that academic progress and success is a marathon, not a race. You will not find technology, textbooks or tests in our early grades classrooms. Instead, you will find students working with beeswax crayons and watercolor paints, doing handwork activities such as knitting and woodworking, and spending significant amounts of time outside playing, gardening, and going on walks and hikes. You will also find teachers singing in the hallways, telling stories by heart in their classrooms, and creating beautiful drawings on the classroom chalkboard.

Previous Public Waldorf teaching experience or training not required. All COS teachers will receive training during June-July- August and then during the school year. A solid background in understanding all aspects of child development is expected; interest in brain-based learning and progressive approaches to working with children is a plus. Individuals hired for 2017-2018 teaching positions will be required to attend Public Waldorf Education training(s) taking place at the Sunbridge Institute (Chestnut Ridge, NY) in June and/or July 2017.

Additionally, all COS teachers will be required to perform the following duties:

  • Believe deeply in the mission and values of Circle of Seasons Charter School
  • Demonstrate strong Public Waldorf Education pedagogy and effective classroom management
  • Hold high expectations for each student and exhibit positive rapport with students
  • Continually improve teaching skills by seeking out constructive feedback and professionaldevelopment opportunities
  • Demonstrate initiative and integrity
  • Establish and maintain strong communication lines with all parents
  • Attend all staff meetings
  • Other duties as assigned by the school leader

Please submit your resume along with a letter of interest describing how or why Public Waldorf Education resonates with you personally and/or professionally. Resumes and letters of interest should be sent directly to Phil Arnold at parnold@circleofseasons.org.

Alternative Education Educator Looking For Opportunities

Beginning with the 2017-2018 academic year I am looking for a new challenge.

A bit about myself.

  • I am a UK trained primary school teacher
  • I have taught English, Literature and Psychology up to GCSE (age 16) level; worked at Summerhill School for five years as a Teacher and Houseparent; am a Third Culture Kid; have an MEd in Politics, Development and Democratic Education from University of Cambridge; built a few tree houses; currently teach Grade 4 at the United Nations International School in New York; am a founding member of play:groundNYC; and wrote a chapter for the Palgrave International Handbook of Alternative Education.

I would like to work with primary/elementary aged children in an alternative setting and am open to combining this with other responsibilities within the school. I am a German citizen, so visa requirements might apply for some countries.

Please get in touch (pklaus13@gmail.com) if you think I might be the right person for your school or project.

See Replay of School Starters Webinar!

Only once a year we have a free school starters webinar. It was on Thursday, September 8th. You can see it here and even send in a new question which we'll respond to.

How long have you been talking about starting a new educational alternative? We'd like to help you make that dream a reality!

The 11th AERO Online School Starter Course will begin on September 26th, 2016. That's only 2 weeks away! It will run until January. Enrollment is limited to 25 participants. Up to five people can participate from each site without additional cost.

AERO has helped start more than 100 educational alternatives. You can see a partial list here. Since AERO's mission is the Education Revolution, we try to help people create as many learner-centered alternatives as we can. This course has been the most effective way we have discovered to help people go from their dream and vision to the reality of a new, vibrant educational alternative.

The course is not in real time except for an occasional optional live Skype or Google chat.  The course is on a dedicated website so you can access it from anywhere in the world at your own pace and schedule, responding to each section as we open it and responding to the posts of other students in the course. The site has videos, audio interviews, book excerpts, etc.

The two instructors are Jerry Mintz, director of AERO, and Chris Mercogliano, author of How to Grow a School and long-time director of Albany Free School.  But the key to the course is the interaction between the students.

You can take the course for up to 3 graduate credits from Antioch University New England. The full course is now $1000 but will rise to $1200 shortly. It is now $1500 if you want graduate credit.

You can get more information about the course or sign up for it here. It has already started to fill up for this year! Inquire if you need payments or scholarship help.

If you have questions you can write to Jerryaero@aol.com
