Description

Partnership education is an exciting new approach to school reform and curriculum development, based on principles of caring, democracy, cooperation, and deep respect for human diversity. We are delighted to introduce Partnership Education in Action, an inspiring yet practical manual for educators who seek to go beyond standardization and competition to practice these principles in their classrooms. This original and brand new guidebook explains the philosophical basis of partnership education and provides thorough descriptions of numerous lesson plans and transformational changes that are possible within the classroom and school environment.

Partnership Education in Action is written and edited by teachers and school leaders who have developed the three essential elements of this integrated approach–partnership process (learner-focused teaching methods and professional collaboration), partnership structure (a thoughtfully planned, nurturing learning environment), and partnership content (a holistic curriculum that engages young people in exploring and critically understanding the wondrous complexity of their world).

The book clearly explains how a school team, or even an individual teacher, can change the instructional atmosphere dramatically by infusing educational goals with these basic principles. Partnership education is rooted in Riane Eisler's groundbreaking research on cultural evolution. Eisler is best known for her 1987 book The Chalice and the Blade, which described the contrast between "dominator" and "partnership" orientations across cultures. In her newest book, Tomorrow's Children (2000), Eisler explains how modern schooling tends to reinforce dominator values such as competition, control, and hierarchical ranking, and she outlines a vision of education guided by partnership values such as compassion, equality, and nonviolence.

Partnership Education in Action applies this vision concretely in the classroom and school community. The Foundation for Educational Renewal has collaborated with The Center for Partnership Studies to produce this important new resource for educators. It can be used on its own to help educators introduce partnership principles into their practice, but we recommend that teachers or staffs serious about exploring partnership education also study Eisler's Tomorrow's Children.
