Clonlara School is seeking a full-time Science and Math Faculty for the Olders program

Clonlara School is seeking a full time high school math/science teacher. We are an independent K-12 situated in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We believe students learn best when they can take ownership of their education while having guidance from close mentors. We focus on three main educational pillars. We provide the student with the autonomy to follow their innate strengths, talents, interests, and curiosities; we develop deep relationships between the student and their peers, faculty, family, and surrounding community; and we challenge the student to gain competence for whatever future they desire.

Clonlara School is seeking a full-time Science and Math Faculty for the Olders program (9th-12th grade) for the 2016-2017 year. The ideal candidate will have these minimum qualifications:

  • At least 3 years teaching experience in the classroom or alternative teaching endeavors.
  • Experience teaching a plethora of other subjects (music, game theory, psychology, underwater basket weaving, social skills, etc.)
  • Experience teaching in a project-based, student-centered, or place-based setting
  • Experience planning and leading trips in an outdoor setting
The Science and Math Faculty has the following core responsibilities:
  • Teach instructor-led courses per semester based off of the interests and needs of the students
  • Advise and mentor students in academic and personal planning
  • Foster community by developing events and programs with the school as a whole
  • Work collaboratively with a team of teachers

AERO attends presentation in Manhattan by Zoe Weil

On April 21st we had the good fortune to attend a special presentation in Manhattan by Zoe Weil, founder of the Institute for Humane Education and Grammy-nominated Matt Goldman, co-founder of the Blue Man Group and the Blue School. Among other topics in their wide-ranging discourse about education reform, Zoe talked about her newly released boon, The World Becomes What We Teach: Educating a Generation of Solutionaries, which is available in the AERO bookstore. This is her seventh book. Of course, the Blue Man Group’s performances are world-famous. And the Blue School has been referenced by Sir Ken Robinson as an example of what he things a school should be. It has a learner-centered approach.

Zoe feels that schools need to be focused more on finding the solutions to local national and world problems, and basing the curriculum on questions about these problems that children want to have answered.

The Albany Free School and Harriet Tubman

With the news that the US treasury department will put Harriet Tubman on the $20 Bill, we wonder if the Albany Free School students project might have helped in some way. In 2003 a group of Free School students discovered that Tubman had worked as a spy for the Union forces but had never been compensated for it. Here’s an article about their successful fight to get that compensation and preserve the Tubman house.

In addition, the Free School helped establish a democratic high school named after Harriet Tubman.
