Maintenance Coordinator/Teacher Job Description

Description of school:  Arthur Morgan School is a small, alternative boarding and day school for 27 boys and girls in grades 7-9. Our 100 acre campus, located in the Black Mountains of North Carolina, consists mainly of woods and meadows, with creeks and a pond; it is surrounded by National Forest. The school fosters a loving, energetic living/learning community dedicated to supporting individuality while teaching group cooperation. A balance is sought between academics, outdoor activities, and meaningful work. Experiential learning and responsible participation in community are emphasized throughout.  Boarding students live in homes with two or three staff members, and the entire community actively shares work, study, play, and decision-making.

General Responsibilities:  It takes a lot of energy to work here.  We have intense work schedules–usually 60 plus hours per week. Our work calendar generally follows a conventional school year calendar, with some additional work required during students’ breaks. AMS is staff-run by consensus; we have no director or headmaster. All staff
are expected to attend our two weekly staff meetings, two of our four Board Meetings, and to participate in running the school cooperatively.  Everyone is also expected to attend our weekly student-run All School Meeting and to participate in work projects with the kids. Most of the staff is also involved in planning and leading backpacking/outdoor trips, our 18 day field trips, and any other special field trips or projects/activities we undertake.

Maintenance Coordinator:  The maintenance coordinator creatively leads students and staff in caring for campus buildings, grounds, and vehicles. The coordinator designs internships for small groups of students to problem-solve maintenance issues; leads students and other staff in weekly work projects; and is the school’s point of connection with external contacts, such as local contractors, the DMV, the Health Department, etc.  Outside of the coordinatorship, additional duties may include teaching electives; accompanying students on 3-, 6-, 8-, and 18-day field trips; leading sports and games; participation in staff committees; cooking; and chore supervision.

Requirements:  All AMS staff possess a variety of skills, talents, and interests, and our jobs cover a wide array of responsibilities at the school. You must be committed to alternative education; be interested in learning: enjoy being around teenagers; be able to work cooperatively with other adults; and enjoy a simple lifestyle that includes physical work and outdoor activities.  Experience is desired with lumberjacking, road maintenance, plumbing, carpentry, vehicle mechanics, farm machinery, and power tools. Expertise is not required, but a willingness to problem-solve and work creatively with others is essential, as is a willingness to learn about and work within the consensus process.  Flexibility and a sense of humor are also very important. We ask for at least a two year commitment from new staff members, as it takes a year for new staff to become acclimated to our program.

Benefits:  Staff receive room and most board, excellent health coverage including vision and dental, and various other benefits, as well as a salary of about $15,000.

During this process we are interested in staff and student interactions with and observations of the applicant, and we are interested in the applicant’s questions and observations of our program. If an in-person visit is not possible, a Skype interview may be substituted, although we acknowledge that it provides both us and the candidate less information upon which to make a decision.

Innovative Program for At-Risk Youth Wins Award from Norwalk School Board

Union, IA  June 11, 2018

A chance meeting on a plane 11 years ago led to the fulfillment of a dream for one Iowa educator and the completion of high school for 64 of the most at-risk students in Iowa to date. Iowa Net High Academy, the dream of Dr. Cynthia Knight of Union, IA, provides a path to high school completion for the most at-risk students in Iowa’s school system — those that have dropped out or are at risk of dropping out.  In Iowa over 4,000 students drop out each year.

For that reason, the school board in Norwalk, IA, whose district graduated six students through the program this past year, has chosen to recognize Iowa Net High Academy and Dr. Cynthia Knight with their Board Award.  Four students remain in the program and will graduate early next year.

The board presents an award each year to an individual or program that deserves recognition for outstanding work in the school district.

Knight’s program, Iowa Net High Academy has an 84 percent graduation rate.  Of the students Norwalk assigned the program this year, 86 percent graduated with a high school diploma from the district. Most of those student would never have graduated high school at all without the program.

Iowa NET High Academy provides an alternative to completing traditional high school that is personalized: based on the student’s strengths and career interests. Each unique student has a learning path that incorporates the Common Core Standards to meet the graduation requirements of the districts served. Working closely with partnering districts,  the program creates a positive educational experience that meets the school’s requirements for graduation while preparing the student for the next steps in life.

Agile Learning Facilitators act as models, space-holders, and mentors of self-directed living and intentional culture creation. Above all, facilitators need to be grounded in the perspective of trusting children, partnership-based relationships, and personal responsibility.

Basics: terms, hours, compensation

 

  • This full-time facilitator role would be primarily fulfilled on Monday – Friday from the hours of 8:30am to 4:30pm* .
  • The term of employment begins on August 6th, 2018 and will conclude June 7th, 2019.
  • Compensation is an annual salary of $30,000.
  • At this time we do not offer health insurance or benefits.
  • The facilitator will have to go through background check.

* The job includes breaks during all school holidays.

*The compensation for this role also includes additional “off-site” time, estimated at 1 hour/day, to account for any prep work done before or after school, communications with staff and parents outside of school hours, and any other spontaneous needs that emerge within the scope of the facilitator’s role in the community.

*Opportunities for additional compensation are available through the ability to organize formal or informal camps during school breaks and/or over the summer.

AERO to Live Stream Conference!

For the first time ever AERO will live stream all the major presentations at the AERO Conference. Many people have requested that we do this and we now have created and tested the setup for a high quality live stream.
