SelfDesign Workshops

March 8, 4 PM PDT—Mali Burgess  (Note: Daylight Savings Time)
The Art and Architecture of Consciousness
We will explore the ways fundamental patterns and dynamics of relationship are reflected in the foundational processes of life and the deep structures of consciousness, and how these dynamics embody the essence and beauty that simultaneously describe the most basic and most complex of living systems, from patterns embodied by the natural world to social networks, sacred structures, the subtle body, processes of consciousness, and nondual awareness.

Mali’s works as a visual artist have been shown and awarded nationally and internationally. She is the author of Still and a number of online publications. Her research has involved geometric dynamics and the psychophysiological effects of the architecture of space, engaged economics, and creative awareness and self healing. She is the founder of Iris Institute, a nonprofit organization. She has worked with children ages 2-12, is a faculty member at Energy Medicine University and is a member of our faculty. March 15, 7 PM PDT—Ba Luvmour
Consciousness, Children, and Education (Rescheduled from February)
How do children organize their world? What does that organization reveal about the nature of human consciousness? What are the implications for education (and parenting)? Bateson, Aurobindo, and many others have carefully invited us to delve into the relationship between Mind and Nature. How is that relationship expressed in children? Exploring these questions, and any you may have, provide the field in which this webinar takes place.

Co-founder of Summa Institute in Portland, Oregon (summainstitute.org) and co-creator of Natural Learning Relationships, Ba has published five books, taught hundreds of parents and children, and led countless programs for families since 1985. Ba is also a member of our faculty. His books include Optimal Parenting: Using Natural Learning Rhythms to Nurture the Whole Child and Beyond Metaphor: Dialogue from the Realm of Self-Knowledge.  summainstitute.org

Field Academy Workshops

The Field Academy is offering a series of workshops for educators who are looking to incorporate field-based education into their programs or curricula and who seek a community of practice to do so.

Are you inspired to learn and teach from the people and places around you? Do you see field-based education as a necessary tool for social change? Join the Field Academy at one of our educator workshops to build skills, share tools, and design curriculum with a community of innovative educators.

Applications due June 5th

Who should attend?
Educators from all different settings: public, private, charter, semester, and independent schools; community organizers; homeschool educators; after school/summer camp; non-profit organizations. The Field Academy runs programs for high school students, but educators working with elementary-aged to adults have found relevance in our programs.

What is "field-based"curriculum?
We use the term field-based curriculum to refer to people learning "in the field" from the places and people that surround them. We do this through an exploration of the individual, the group, and the larger systemic context. Educational terms like place-based, travel-based, experiential, expeditionary, adventure-based, and critical pedagogy are, while not interchangeable, all relevant.

Who is facilitating?
All of our educator workshops are co-facilitated by Field Academy staff and alumni. In addition, we often bring in guest facilitators with extensive experience specific to the topic of the retreat.

Register for the AERO Conference today!

Don't Miss the AERO Conference, May 20-25 at LIU/Post University, near New York City!

The AERO conference is a unique event. There is no other one like it in the USA and only one other in the world, the IDEC, this year in New Zealand. It is a gathering of people who are involved with revolutionizing education, and who already have some of the answers. They demonstrate and work toward a learner-centered approach, one that empowers students, teachers and parents. It is based on the fact, confirmed by brain research, that children are natural learners and do not need to be forced to learn. In fact, if students are forced to learn it extinguishes their natural ability to learn, something that, unfortunately, happens in 95% of all schools.

One of this year's keynote speakers is Sugata Mitra, winner of the TED Award and famous for the "Hole in the Wall Experiment" in which he put a computer in a wall in a slum area of India. Over the next few months the children not only taught themselves to use the computer, but also taught themselves English!

There will be five documentaries featured, some premiering, some with the filmmakers presenting! For example, Amy Valens, who made "Good Morning Mission Hill," about the extraordinary public school Debbie Meier started, will present her film, and Debbie Meier will join her! Jeremy Stuart, who made the critically acclaimed "Class Dismissed," which followed an unschooling family for two years, will come from California to present his documentary!

For the first time in five years the North American Democratic Education Conference will be part of the AERO conference, bringing students and staff members from many democratic schools and presenting their own workshops for all. On Wednesday, the 20th there will be visits to democratic and alternatives schools in the area. There will also be a Minecraft server for the conference.

We are offering the readers of this message the possibility of registering for the AERO conference at the earlybird rate, which actually lapsed at the end of January. To register just go to the AERO conference site

and to get the 10% discount to the earlybird rate, put in the coupon 2014member

Here's a link to the conference flyer.

Conference registration is open!

We're getting this year's AERO conference off to a flying start this week. The early bird rate is still on but will end after the first 100 of you have registered, and the price will go higher than usual because of the amazing people and things happening at this year's conference. You can now get full registration, make a deposit to hold the early bird rate, get single or double dorm rooms, or get a package including dorm and conference registration. We have the better (ground level) dorms this year, and we may run out of dorm space. Food will again be at the cafeteria a la carte, although we may have one banquet night. But generally this will save you a lot. Most venues don't let you do this.

Of course Sugata Mitra is now under contract  and will definitely keynote the AERO conference. He has some special ideas about it. The conference will also explore technology and educational alternatives. So workshops on that theme are welcome. But we will also be happy to have our usual wonderful spectrum of presentations about learner-centered education. We will be announcing other keynoters over time.
