Innovative Program for At-Risk Youth Wins Award from Norwalk School Board

Union, IA  June 11, 2018

A chance meeting on a plane 11 years ago led to the fulfillment of a dream for one Iowa educator and the completion of high school for 64 of the most at-risk students in Iowa to date. Iowa Net High Academy, the dream of Dr. Cynthia Knight of Union, IA, provides a path to high school completion for the most at-risk students in Iowa’s school system — those that have dropped out or are at risk of dropping out.  In Iowa over 4,000 students drop out each year.

For that reason, the school board in Norwalk, IA, whose district graduated six students through the program this past year, has chosen to recognize Iowa Net High Academy and Dr. Cynthia Knight with their Board Award.  Four students remain in the program and will graduate early next year.

The board presents an award each year to an individual or program that deserves recognition for outstanding work in the school district.

Knight’s program, Iowa Net High Academy has an 84 percent graduation rate.  Of the students Norwalk assigned the program this year, 86 percent graduated with a high school diploma from the district. Most of those student would never have graduated high school at all without the program.

Iowa NET High Academy provides an alternative to completing traditional high school that is personalized: based on the student’s strengths and career interests. Each unique student has a learning path that incorporates the Common Core Standards to meet the graduation requirements of the districts served. Working closely with partnering districts,  the program creates a positive educational experience that meets the school’s requirements for graduation while preparing the student for the next steps in life.

Announcement of Job Opportunity

Dat School is hiring a full-time facilitator to work with its students (ages 5 – 12) and in partnership with the rest of the school’s staff team, students, and parents. Agile Learning Facilitators act as models, space-holders, and mentors of self-directed living and intentional culture creation. Above all, facilitators need to be grounded in the perspective of trusting children, partnership-based relationships, and personal responsibility.

This is the perfect role for you if…

  • You have experience cultivating authentic, respectful, and partnership-based relationships with people of all ages and will take great joy in leading a Spawn Point (small group of mixed-aged students) that meets each day to connect, set intentions, and reflect together
  • You are a passionate, curious, and joyful person with a variety of interests and abilities that you will enjoy sharing with young people through Offerings made at our Set-the-Week meeting and through spontaneous, self-organized activities
  • You are excited to practice the art of “maximum support with minimal interference” in the context of working with young people
  • You are motivated to work towards social justice initiatives within the context of intentional community building, including supporting our ALC in playing an active role in the liberation and empowerment of historically disenfranchised and marginalized students.
  • You understand and are aligned with the basic principles of Self-Directed Education
  • You are comfortable self-starting, adapting to changing circumstances, not always having the answer, navigating interpersonal relationships, coordinating logistics, and communicating effectively in multiple forms.
  • You are, yourself, self-directed: you don’t need to be told what to do in order to be productive in your role; you can notice what needs to be done and take action, while communicating effectively with team members along the way
  • You live in, or are able to relocate to, New Orleans LA, in the next two months.

Bay State Learning Center is looking for start-up minded staff members to help us establish a second Bay State Learning Center in Cambridge, MA.

Bay State Learning Center is looking for start-up minded staff members to help us establish a second Bay State Learning Center in Cambridge, MA.

Bay State Learning Center is a non-coercive and self-directed learning community, we believe that learning is natural and teachers and students can collaborate to make education a dynamic creative process. We are a departure from traditional education and do not make use of tests, grades, negative reinforcement and extrinsic motivators. We believe in helping students to access resources so they can work to reach their own goals and cultivate their own passions.

We are looking for a forward-thinking educators with enthusiasm and creativity to not only teach but to wear the many hats required when running an organization: marketing, fund-raising, outreach, development and working directly with self-directed learners. It is a demanding but incredibly rewarding opportunity. We have been developing BSLC for four years now and we are a stable thriving program on the cusp of growing much larger. Do the kind of creative teaching you have always wanted to do, without the power struggles and unnecessary difficulties of traditional school. In a small setting like BSLC the potential for developing new ideas is limitless.

Bay State Learning Center is based on the model pioneered by Northstar Self-DIrected Learning for Teens in Sunderland, Massachusetts. There are over 14 Liberated Learners Self-Directed Learning Centers across North America and the movement is growing. Become a part of the future of education.
Paid positions are contingent on the success of the new program. This will not be easy but there is an opportunity to get a new program up and running with much less effort and overhead than is the norm.
