How to Find the Right School for Your Child Without Spending a Fortune

Every day we receive desperate requests from distraught parents who are searching for alternative educational options for their children. Of course no two cases are the same, but there is a general pattern that people can follow who are searching for something that will work for their child.

We have free resources on the AERO website and use of them should be your first action.

  1. Go to the AERO member school list. Go to your country or go to the United States and go to your state. Click on the websites of alternatives in your state that might be of use. If you find one of interest, go to their contact information and write to them to schedule a visit.
  2. You should also check out our list of democratic schools. There are some schools on this list that are not on the AERO member list because it is free for schools to be on this list. Again, search the ones of interest and arrange visits.
  3. If you are looking for a higher education alternative, go to this list and do the same.
  4. Don't forget the International section of the member list. These are sometimes distance learning alternatives.
  5. If you can't find anything near you and can't move, consider homeschooling. It is legal in every state, but every state has its own unique laws. Usually there is information on the laws of your state under your state department of education. In some states there is little you need to to to start homeschooling. In other states, such as New York, you might need to write a letter of intent and later file an individualized home education plan. But even in that case it doesn't need to be "approved," just filed properly.
  6. You might consider starting your own alternative school or homeschool resource center. Again, each state has its own laws about starting a new alternative. In some states, such as California, the easiest thing is to start a school, even if it is just your own children. In other states it might be easier to start a homeschool resource center. AERO has resources for people starting new alternatives such as our online course for school starters. We've been doing it for ten years and have helped to start over 100 alternatives. You can see the map of some of them. There are also school starter workshops at the AERO Conference.
  7. If you have the freedom to move you can have quite a wide area of choices. You can look at our lists and just think about what looks good and where you'd like to live.
  8. If you still need help with finding an alternative you can have a free 15 minute consultation with an AERO staff member. You can decide later if you want a full one which is only $100. You can write to info@educationrevolution.org or call the AERO office at 800 769-4171 or 516 621 2195.

school.

Sudbury School of Atlanta, located in Avondale Estates, GA, is a democratic PreK12 school

that follows the Sudbury model of education. Students have tremendous freedom to pursue their

interests at their own pace and in their own way. Student freedom is balanced by responsibility

interacting effectively with children and adults from a wide variety of backgrounds

● Be an interested, interesting, engaged, and passionate person

authentically and effectively prioritize

● Ability to maintain confidentiality

● Pass required background checks before beginning employment

● Ability to trust in the school’s democratic School Meeting and peerbased judicial system

to adequately resolve conflicts and issues

As one of a team of two paid staff, you will have a wide variety of responsibilities. SSA hopes to

grow our community and the ideal candidate will be willing and able to act as one of the leaders

in this effort. While you do not need to have marketing experience, a willingness to gain skills in

this area and to think flexibly and creatively about how we can promote our school are essential.

Staff members should be able to act as models of responsibility, resourcefulness, initiative, and

good conflict resolution, and be willing to listen to and accept feedback. Staff are expected to

continually read about and work within the Sudbury model of education.

Staff are required to be at school 8:45am to 3:15pm Monday through Friday, with hours outside

of school hours expected for meetings and administrative or marketing work. Please submit a

German psychologist and organizer is seeking internship in a democratic school abroad

German psychologist and organizer is seeking internship in a democratic school abroad

I am a studied psychologist (core area: educational psychology), 40 years of age, with professional experience in mainly two fields: holistic caring for children and youth in a children's home; and organizing projects for children and youth, including a larger project with multiple partners and a 60,000 $ budget. As a member of the European Democratic Education Community, I am used to and sympathize with the concept of democratic education.

Right now, I feel the time is right for me to gain practical experience in a democratic school. I am offering my labor for a period of at least 3, preferably 6 months (prolongation negotiable), beginning anytime in 2016, in exchange for:

  • Free board and (simple!) lodging, or sufficient payment for that. A shared flat is completely enough!

  • Health insurance, or sufficient payment for that

  • Some pocket money

Some examples of what I can do for your school:

  • Teach:

    • psychology

    • German culture and language

    • sports, especially swimming and triathlon

    • statistics, calculus of probabilities and lower grade other mathematics

  • Support your school's organization and administration, including your communications/PR

  • Contribute a psychological perspective to your school's understanding of certain pupils, parents or other matters

  • Be a pleasant teammate

  • Do "easy" things you never have the time to!

I speak English and German, so it is essential that your students of all ages speak one of these languages, too. My strong wish, furthermore, is to experience a region warmer than Germany – at least sunnier. So your school must be located in such a region. Heat and humidity aren't problems to me.

What I can NOT offer is psychotherapy, nor professional experience in practical psychology in its narrower sense. I can contribute M.A.-level psychological knowledge combined with hands-on experience in caring for children and youth (including work with parents), though.

If you're interested in my flexible, committed support or have any questions, please write me an e-mail: vorwaertsgang@posteo.de ! I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon!
