Elliot Hallmark is an alternative educator by profession, engineer by hobby, and bicyclist by mode of transport. As a naturalist, his perspective is scientific and critical. He desires to spend decades participating in practical progress towards an example of a beautiful standard of living, and he is overjoyed to be an equal member of a young democratic community of staff and students known as Clearview Sudbury School, located in Austin, Texas.

Elliot's formal education was traditional. He went to public schools in an affluent area, did reasonably well, took AP classes, hung out with friends, caused minor mischief in the neighborhood, cheated on homework, etc. After high school, Elliot went to the expected private liberal arts college and spent a year indulging in Marxist-Freudian political theory and booze. Though gratifying, this was unpractical and after a year he fled on a personal quest. He eventually settled in Northern California. There, he both studied naturalism (through a local club and also later through employment at a native plant nursery) and earned his Bachelors of Science in Physics (with an emphasis on geology).

After college, Elliot blossomed as an autodidact. He was finally free to read the historical scientific texts that his teachers never had, and to chase dreams of engineering and material science. He continues to educate himself and make steady progress as an amateur in the fields of non-imaging optics (ideal solar concentrators) and synthetic alumino-silicates (geopolymers).
