As Lisa learns more about her teachers and their lives, she realizes that they are more than just the persona she meets in the classroom.

Outside In tackles a wide range of disabilities and differences, including physical handicaps, sexual orientation, xenophobia, racial and age discrimination, and religious prejudice. It reminds readers that much of our education happens beyond the bounds of academic lessons. A book for students, teachers, parents, and friends of all ages, Inside Out reminds each of us that tolerance begins by seeing people as human, by looking beyond what they present on the outside and finding out who they are on the inside.

"How wonderful for someone so special in her own right to write a book which helps the reader realize just how very special they are as well! I believe this would be a great book for elementary school students to read; it can open up discussions on various topics that are important to our lives. How we engage with those who are different than us is troubling at best for most of us. Written from the viewpoint of a fifth grader – attending a school where the adults are forthcoming about disabilities – the story is both enchanting and heartwarming. We follow the student around the school and we meet the principal, the teachers, the janitor and more. After gentle questioning from the student, the adults reveal the stories of their own disabilities and challenges. The innocence of a child and the sensitivity of an adult combine to deliver a message of tolerance and respect. The Outside in Book will provide students with a tool for appreciating all kinds of people they meet in their lives and the classroom teacher with a guide for stimulating meaningful and important conversations in the classroom." – Dr. Arnold Dodge

Lisa Harris Mintz is an educator who has taught children, in almost every subject area, from preschool through high school.
