But the analysis of why this happens didn&#39;t ever get to the core of the situation: <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">\n\t<span>&nbsp;<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">\n\t<span>As I said in one of my<a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=0014uBkrbxc7KMFlyHG0X-0fEYaYyEY44eKXFZJhJPaoVS_GC6a8ME8T_rUs0WLNtynQf6xonHmuvg6YFj77zvXQl4nsmOyU199Ib3VqcrhhRDv5SEC4lNvBg9C0sUy_I_uI6iFv0lbVVLZb5YYoev4c2gYIYppMhlPSY7Kk-xy4-5ROC5LrKqAP3sM1ajeOBno1mcTA4SAAhk=&amp;c=&amp;ch=\" shape=\"rect\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration: underline;\" target=\"_blank\"> TEDx talks,<\/a> &quot;<\/span><span>I think that the best way to prepare students to participate in a democratic society is to have them grow up in democratic schools. Why do we have them experience 12 years of a dictatorship and then expect them to be ready for democracy? <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">\n\t<span>Why would we think that people who attended schools for twelve or more years would be prepared to vote when they didn&#39;t grow up participating in a democracy?&nbsp; In fact, the training in 95% of the schools seems to be how to live and survive in a dictatorship.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">\n\t<figure id=\"attachment_1816\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1816\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left;\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.educationrevolution.org\/store\/files\/2012\/10\/mintz-foto-150x225.jpg\" alt=\"Jerry Mintz\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1816\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jerry Mintz<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n\t<span>You would think this would be self-evident. Democratic schools are very successful and their graduates do amazing things. Most of the schools we help people start have a sliding scale tuition and are interracial and have a spectrum of students.<\/span><br \/>\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">\n\t<span>Related to all of this is bullying. I believe that no program will &quot;cure&quot; bulling in mainstream public and private schools because of their top-down, authoritarian nature.&nbsp; In that situation there will always be people at the &quot;bottom&quot; who will be bullied by those above. But in democratic and non-authoritarian&nbsp; learner-centered schools bullying is hardly seen. When it does happen, a democratic meeting about it can be called right away. Even in public at-risk alternatives, researcher <a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=0014uBkrbxc7KMFlyHG0X-0fEYaYyEY44eKXFZJhJPaoVS_GC6a8ME8T_rUs0WLNtyn3ScFyUbdvKRSk3nkrB1LLC5F44b-M2ARcbrYUU0HhtGBJa7ClwlOZS3xYdJAC9Ejk1KNf7E5Wc4Zc1QMLHBODomVt3hxmsKLxLcTJxNzDkAAb3Ef76R3Ip4PrdeFvF9eoHA2Di41YXMzKrk44wxo8PhqIiyZ6fsamHUP4uZ35dfGZiVQVTCXMfeAqM5VCJHyAXmprY8FGFuWdw5EgbD_-2wBATRWtHkziXKkyuY7aMA=&amp;c=&amp;ch=\" shape=\"rect\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255); text-decoration: underline;\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Robert Barr <\/a>discovered a starting drop in bullying statistics when he looked at alternative schools in his research.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<p>\n\t<span>You might wonder why research like this doesn&#39;t lead to drastic changes. I do, too. But I think that the current authoritarian system serves some economic vested interests and is also more akin to a religion. It is based on habits and&nbsp; rituals and not very amenable to research or discussion. So that is our challenge! We know that learner-centered and democratic schools work.
