Do you feel drawn to Education but discouraged by the thought of having to work within the increasingly-restrictive boxes of mainstream schools? Do you imagine opening a school of your own someday but don&#8217;t know where to start?\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">South Mountain Co-op is in our first year of operation as a Democratic&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Free School in Essex County NJ. We&#39;re currently serving 28 students&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">between the ages of 4.5 and 15.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">We&#39;re looking for interns to help staff the school, as well as interns&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">to help with the administrative work of running the school. Among us,&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">the co-founders have 8 years&#39; experience in staffing and running&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Democratic Free Schools, and we are excited to share that experience&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">with anyone who believes in the democratic free school model of&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">education: that students learn and thrive when offered the space to&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">direct their own learning, follow their own interests, and be fully&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">involved in the decision-making process of the school<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">What you&#39;ll learn as an intern at SMC:<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Staff internship:<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">how to engage with students in a non-coercive, joyful way<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">how to facilitate consensus-based decision making<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">how to put conflict resolution and NVC techniques into practice<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tAdministrative internship:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tthe nitty gritty, behind the scenes work that goes in to starting and&nbsp;running an alternative school\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tthe organizational skills to run committees and work groups, and to&nbsp;manage projects of your own.\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tSMC interns will get:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tregular mentoring from a co-founder\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tthe opportunity to be involved in every level of decision making of&nbsp;the operation of the school&nbsp;\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\ta letter describing and documenting the work you&#39;ve done with us and&nbsp;the skills you&#39;ve acquired\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tWe&#39;re looking for applicants who:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tcan commit at least 2 days a week, for 12 weeks\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tbelieve in the tenets of democratic free schools\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tare reliable and self-directed workers\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tFor more information contact&nbsp;Mary Karl-Gruswitz here:&nbsp;girlfromthefuture@fastmail.fm<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you believe that teachers should be free to focus on curiosity, exploration, play, and authentic connection with students?
