Honduras Child Alliance Seeking Volunteers, School Groups, Project Manager.

Via a staff of volunteers from all over the world, we provide educational enrichment classes to children in our community.  We do literacy immersion in Spanish, conversational English and lots of art and music. We also partner with a program called Level Up Village (LUV). Most of our kids had never even touched a computer prior to our classes and LUV focuses on problem solving activities using STEAM  – – which is STEM plus Art – – a good fit for us.

Our educational philosophy is curiosity based, project based, child driven, etc., which is very different from what the children in Honduras would typically experience in their public schools, and so we have realized that it would be helpful to try to recruit volunteers who share a similar philosophy and have experienced it in action.

We are in need of volunteers who can stay with us 6 weeks or longer.  Many stay 6 months to a year and their only expense with us is for housing ($4 to $6 per day).  We also seek 1-2 week school groups and actually had a group from Upattinas a few years ago that was amazing!  We generally accept individual volunteers who are 20+ but I would be open to homeschoolers or families with teens as well.

One last need is that we seek an annual project manager each year.  This is generally someone who would like non-profit / international education experience.  They need to be able to speak Spanish on at least an intermediate level and hopefully already have volunteered abroad.  A background in education, social work, psychology, is helpful but not totally required.  The Project Manager receives a private room and bathroom, wifi, a phone and a stipend of 500 HNL per week to cover their food.  It's not a paid position other than the stipend but they can pretty much live without spending much so it's a great position for someone who wants to gain some experience.  Plus, we literally live next to the Caribbean Sea, which is not a bad way to wake up each morning for a year!
