Research on Learner-Centered Education

Research plays an essential role in strengthening the foundation of learner-centered education and paving the way for greater understanding and recognition of this approach. Such research is especially beneficial in providing evidence of the value of learner-centered education to parents, educators, policy-makers, and school leaders.

Below is a compilation of quantitative and qualitative research studies and expert reports focused on learner-centered issues in education, including self-determination, participatory education, democratic schools, progressive practices, intrinsic motivation, and more. The research is organized into the following sections: Expert Reports, School-based Research, Positive Psychology, Learning Theories, and Neuroscience.

The research demonstrates that learner-centered educational environments enable young people to grow intellectually/cognitively, socially, and personally, and support young people to develop the confidence, responsibility, critical-thinking, compassion, creativity, and self-awareness they need to succeed and lead happy, fulfilling lives.
