Start a School 101
Instructor: Chris Mercogliano & Jerry Mintz
At a time when the U.S. education system is failing under the burden of the ill-conceived No Child Left Behind program, it is crucial that we create alternative school models, all across the country and around the world. AERO has decided to pour more of its energy into supporting the creation of a spectrum of new learner-centered alternative schools including home school resource centers. Join us in this campaign and start your own school! Join us in this campaign and start your own school! There is no better time than now!
The goal of this fifteen week course is to help educators assess the feasibility and find the resources required to turn the dream of a school into a sustainable and nurturing educational environment. It will prepare students to undertake the planning to open a learner centered school. The course is designed to address practical as well as philosophical issues pertinent to the process. This includes clarifying the educational vision, building a suitable educational model, mastering the governance techniques, fund raising, legal set up and student and staff recruitment.

History & Theory of Educational Alternatives
Instructor: Ron Miller, Ph.D.
While standardized conventional education continues to dominate schools and educational dialogue, there has long been a growing and vibrant tradition of non-conventional educational approaches. These alternative approaches are based on respect of the individuality of young people and take a broad, holistic view of learning and growth. In collaboration with noted author and educator Ron Miller, AERO is offering this course to those seeking to gain an understanding of what is largely absent from most teacher education programs, namely the development, history, and theory of the varied approaches that constitute alternative education.
The goal of this course is to help students understand the history and the critical issues facing educational alternatives in the United States. Grafted on a conceptual map of the categories of educational alternatives the course. The course will highlight early educational reformers, free and democratic schools, progressive alternatives, social reconstruction and critical pedagogy, Montessori and Waldorf education, holistic education, and community-based learning. The course will also explore more recent reform efforts such as charter schools and school choice, and consider the possibilities for a larger social movement for educational change.
