    Instructor: Ron Miller, Ph.D.

While standardized conventional education continues to dominate schools and educational dialogue, there has long been a growing and vibrant tradition of non-conventional educational approaches. These alternative approaches are based on respect of the individuality of young people and take a broad, holistic view of learning and growth. In collaboration with noted author and educator Ron Miller, AERO is offering this course to those seeking to gain an understanding of what is largely absent from most teacher education programs, namely the development, history, and theory of the varied approaches that constitute alternative education.

The goal of this course is to help students understand the history and the critical issues facing educational alternatives in the United States. Grafted on a conceptual map of the categories of educational alternatives the course. The course will highlight early educational reformers, free and democratic schools, progressive alternatives, social reconstruction and critical pedagogy, Montessori and Waldorf education, holistic education, and community-based learning. The course will also explore more recent reform efforts such as charter schools and school choice, and consider the possibilities for a larger social movement for educational change.
