A small school in Arkansas, Hot Springs Community School, is changing it’s direction. After visiting a non-tuition private school in Memphis, and attending a “Hunger Summit” Founder Bill Vining has decided to open HSCS to a different client. After researching existing services in our county, we found that almost nothing was being done to stop the cycle of poverty. The county has plenty of organizations that are giving food and services to adults but very little to affect the thinking and future of the kids. In our county, the poverty rate has risen 50% in the past 10 years. Our staff decided to open our school up to those that could not normally pay for a private education. We have an awesome curriculum that changes the mediocre thinking that many times accompanies poverty. We are a K-12 multi-age classroom school.
We have children come to us from several ethnic, economic, and Church backgrounds. Our school is expecting 40 students for the 2013-14 school year. Fifteen of those are 1st-6th grade and 25 are upper school students. We believe in multi-age classrooms. Each child’s curriculum is personalized. Our Elementary utilizes around 65% online learning with their iPads. In this Blended Learning style they work at their own pace in an innovative and caring environment. The Upper School uses computers and iPads for the majority of their curriculum learning. All students are given choices and freedom to explore their God-given talents and abilities.
